A Step Towards Freedom from Daily Inhalers: Asthma in a 3½-Year-Old Child

Updated: 4 days ago

Asthma in young children can be extremely distressing for both the child and the parents. Many families become dependent on inhalers for daily relief and often feel there is no long-term solution. This case highlights how individualized homeopathic treatment can help support the child’s recovery.

Presenting Complaints

A 3½-year-old boy was brought to my clinic in January 2026 with complaints of recurrent cold, cough, and breathlessness since the age of 10 months. The symptoms were aggravated by weather changes, dust exposure, and the humid climate of Kolkata. Because of frequent breathing difficulty, the child had been using an inhaler daily as advised by a pulmonologist along with other antibiotics , anti allergic medicines and others .

The child also complained of intermittent stomach pain around the navel, which was aggravated when he drank water after meals or walked soon after eating.

In addition, he had severe nasal blockage with loud snoring and often slept with his mouth open.

Past History

The mother reported that the child had previously taken allopathic treatment for his respiratory complaints, which provided temporary relief but the symptoms kept returning. She had also tried homeopathic medicines from other sources, but the improvement was not satisfactory, and eventually he had to continue regular inhaler therapy.

Family History

There was a family history of asthma from his paternal side, as the child’s grandfather was suffering from asthma.

Examination

On examination, the lungs were clear, most likely because the child had been using inhalers regularly. However, both tonsils were enlarged and congested, and nasal obstruction with congested nasal polyp

General characteristics of the child were also carefully observed. He could not tolerate heat, perspired profusely on the head, had less thirst, and had a strong liking for chocolates. He often became irritable and cranky when hungry, and if contradicted, he would cry in anger. His tongue appeared strawberry-like.

Treatment

Based on the totality of symptoms, an individualized homeopathic medicine was prescribed. The child was also advised steam inhalation and gargling as supportive measures.

Blood tests were recommended, which showed low Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 levels, and appropriate supplementation was advised.

Follow-Up

At the first follow-up after two weeks, the child showed around 60% improvement in his symptoms. Most importantly, he did not require the inhaler after starting homeopathic treatment, which he had been using daily since infancy.

The child is continuing treatment, and further improvement is expected over the coming months.

Conclusion

This case demonstrates how individualized homeopathic treatment, along with proper management and holistic care, can help reduce the frequency and intensity of asthma symptoms in children. With careful management, it may also help reduce dependency on inhalers, improving the child’s overall quality of life. And bring SMILE on face of the child.
