Allergic rhinitis
It is increasingly common in children today, especially in environments where dust, pollution, and climate changes trigger allergies. This is a clinical experience from my practice that shows how individualized homeopathic treatment can help improve such conditions.
A 5 year old boy, who had come to Kolkata from Singapore to visit his maternal grandparents, was brought to my clinic by his mother. His mother is an Oromaxillo-facial surgeon, and she was concerned about her child’s persistent allergic symptoms that had been troubling him for nearly two years.
Present complaints
The child had allergic rhinitis with inferior turbinate hypertrophy. His main complaints included frequent sneezing (more on the right side),
blocked nose with mucus that would not come out, rubbing of eyes, and post-nasal drip leading to cough. The symptoms were worse in the early morning around 4–5 AM, in air-conditioned rooms, during the evening, and especially after playing outside. Dust and mold strongly aggravated his condition.
Past History
His past medical history revealed severe pneumonia, for which he had previously undergone a procedure to drain mucus. For the last two years he had been using steroidal nasal sprays intermittently along with saline sprays, and he was also receiving annual flu vaccination.
After a detailed case-taking and understanding the child’s constitution and symptoms, an individualized homeopathic medicine was prescribed for 15 days, along with simple supportive advice such as steam inhalation for 5 minutes and daily exposure to morning sunlight. Only saline nasal spray was allowed when necessary, and the steroid nasal spray was avoided during this period.
Follow up
During the 15-day follow-up, there was encouraging improvement. No steroid nasal spray was required during this period.
Sneezing had significantly decreased, snoring had disappeared, and eye rubbing was greatly reduced. The blocked nose in the morning had improved, with only mild watery nasal discharge remaining. The child could now play in the playground without triggering severe allergic episodes. Post-nasal drip with cough occurred only three times in the last fifteen days, which was a remarkable reduction compared to before.
The parents were happy to see this progress, and the child continues to recover well with ongoing treatment.
Conclusion
This case highlights how individualized homeopathic management, along with simple lifestyle measures, can support the body’s natural healing and bring relief even in long-standing allergic conditions in children.
