Clinical Case Presentation
Abstract
This clinical case describes the holistic homeopathic management of a 75-year-old male patient suffering from post-paralytic disability, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), neurological tremors, urinary dysfunction, and long-standing tobacco addiction. Over a sustained period of individualised homeopathic treatment, the patient demonstrated significant functional recovery, reduced respiratory dependency on inhalers, improvement in neurological symptoms, better urinary control, and successful quitting (cessation ) of tobacco use. This case highlights the potential supportive role of homeopathy in improving quality of life in complex chronic conditions.
Patient Profile
Name: Mr. Saroj Kumar Saraogi
Age: 75 years
Gender: Male
Chief Complaints
Difficulty in walking without support (stick/crutch)
Tremors of hands, legs, and occasionally the whole body
Breathlessness and chronic respiratory symptoms - taking 5 inhalers a day.
Urinary urgency with inability to hold urine
Long-standing tobacco addiction in multiple forms
History of Present Illness
The patient suffered a paralytic attack in 2006, following which he experienced persistent weakness and difficulty in ambulation. Over time, he developed intermittent tremors of limbs and body, which worsened during febrile episodes and infections.
He was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and required multiple (mostly 5 inhalers) daily for breathlessness.
The patient had a long history of tobacco use, including liquid tobacco (kimam) and other forms of tobacco consumption.
He also developed urinary symptoms due to paresis of the detrusor muscle, leading to urgency, inability to retain urine, and recurrent urinary tract infections.
Past Medical History
Paralytic attack (2006)
COPD
Chronic tobacco use
Family History
A significant family history of oral cancer was present, involving:
Mother
Brother
Clinical Assessment
The case was assessed as a multi-system chronic condition involving:
Neurological impairment (post-paralytic weakness and tremors)
Respiratory pathology (COPD)
Urinary dysfunction (detrusor muscle paresis)
Lifestyle-related disorder (tobacco addiction)
Therapeutic Intervention
The patient was treated with individualised homeopathic medicines under regular clinical monitoring.
The therapeutic approach focused on:
Neurological rehabilitation
Respiratory stabilization
Reduction of tremors
Improvement of urinary function
Gradual withdrawal from tobacco dependence
Enhancement of overall vitality and immunity
Normal independent happy life as much as possible
Clinical Outcome and Follow-Up
Over the course of treatment (approximately one year), the patient showed progressive and sustained improvement:
Independent walking without the need for a stick or support
Significant reduction in tremors of limbs and body
Improvement in COPD symptoms with reduction in inhaler usage from five inhalers per day to one inhaler per day
Improvement in urinary urgency and reduced frequency of UTIs
Complete cessation or quitting of tobacco use for the past 6 months
Marked improvement in physical strength, confidence, and quality of life
Discussion
This case illustrates the complexity of chronic multi-system disorders in elderly patients and the interrelationship between neurological, respiratory, urinary, and lifestyle factors. The improvement observed in this patient suggests that individualized homeopathic treatment may serve in managing chronic conditions along with lifestyle modification and patient motivation.
Conclusion
Individualised homeopathic treatment, combined with patient determination and lifestyle changes, contributed to significant functional recovery in this elderly patient with multiple chronic conditions.
Clinical Significance
Demonstrates improvement in post-paralytic disability and neurological tremors.
Shows supportive benefits in COPD with reduced inhaler dependency.
Highlights improvement in neurogenic bladder symptoms.
Illustrates the role of holistic therapy in tobacco addiction cessation.
Emphasises the importance of lifestyle modification in chronic disease prevention.
